Volunteer Opportunities

Journey’s End offers a wide array of opportunities for individuals, groups, and churches to make a difference. Through our Volunteer Services department, college interns, students, church co-sponsors, groups, professionals, and other good neighbors can provide organizational support and direct services to refugees.

Each volunteer’s interests, talents and capabilities are matched with the current needs and opportunities, such as:

English language tutoring. Volunteers assist refugees at various locations and times to help clients improve their skills in English. College majors in foreign language, linguistics, or anthropology especially should consider serving in this way.

Employment programs. Volunteers are valuable in encouraging early employment and self-sufficiency and serving as mentors about working in the United States. Volunteers assist refugees in employment services such as filling job applications, developing resumes, transporting individuals to interviews or their first day on the job, helping to apply for a New York State ID/driver’s permit, and teaching basic budgeting skills. Volunteers who are knowledgeable of the transit system are valuable in teaching bus routes to newcomers.

Mentoring programs. Volunteer mentors may respond to the special needs of some refugees or refugee groups present. A mentor commits to working one-on-one for a pre-determined period of time to guide the individual (or family) through an important particular process.  These are some examples of important mentoring opportunities.

  • The Priscilla Project—This project partners medically at-risk women with one or two able volunteers who will help walk along side them through the health care system. Read more.
  • An individual helps a family with financial budgeting and decision-making;
  • An individual pairs up with a refugee youth to share insights and guidance on educational decisions and summer jobs.

While these are areas of need, there are many other areas in which individuals with a particular interest or skill can be of assistance.

The Priscilla Project. The Priscilla Project is a collaborative partnership between Jericho Road Ministries and Journey’s End Refugee Services. Located in the same building, the two organizations are combining their efforts to provide holistic health care for refugee women as well as other women in the City of Buffalo.

The Priscilla Project partners medically at-risk women with volunteers who are able to walk along side them through the health care system. The focus is refugee women, women pregnant for the first time, and women with other medical conditions such as diabetes and anemia. We are seeking mature women willing to share their life experiences and be a friend to other women in a time when they need it most. Read more about how you can help.

WNY Citizen Express. Volunteers in this program assist with a variety of components of the naturalization process, such as assisting with the application, helping with photos, or tutoring for the citizenship test/interview (training is provided).

Additional opportunities. JERS welcomes volunteers to assist refugees on either a regular or occasional basis. These are some additional examples of volunteer opportunities:

  • Interpreting, for volunteers with linguistic abilities in Spanish, French, Arabic, and other languages
  • Soliciting and organizing pickups of donations of household goods. View list of needed items
  • Driving the agency truck (no heavy lifting required) for furniture pickup and/or delivery
